Effective Communication is a Blessing in Disguise

What are inter-personal communication skills?

Inter-personal communication is Exchange of information, feelings and meaning through verbal or non-verbal messages. It is just not what is actually said or the language used, but how it is said and how messages are sent through facial expressions, tone of voice, gestures and body language.

What is effective Communication? 

We are humans! Communication is the essence of our life, whether at home, work or public places. Living in a society are we not bound to depend on someone or the other at every phase of our life? If we want people to listen to us, do something for us in a happy disposition, we have to be fair, transparent, Clear and Concise in our communication. When People understand what we are looking at and become willing to do the required job then the communication becomes EFFECTIVE!

How important is communication to Managers?

Managers! do you find Communication critical? 

As we all know Managers are responsible for Planning, Organising, Managing and Executing the tasks. In this process as a manager it is very important for you to identify the right resources, communicate the requirements effectively so that the resources' dependency level on you is minimal. At the same time you can expect outstanding result. 


Therefore be smart, diplomatic and fair in your communication. After all people work to earn a decent salary for which they need to deliver the requirement. Managers are required to be more professional rather than Bureaucratic. Execution becomes easy if managers are simple and straight forward. As simple as this:


Resource Identification => Effectively Communicating the requirement & deliverable => Allocation of work with timelines => 
Encouragement, Motivation & Support ....


NO SUPERVISION is required if you maintain a fair relationship with your team members and treat them as you would want to be treated! 

Anyone would get into trouble when things are manipulated!!!

Why is communication challenging to Techies?

Techies who are humans - while engaging themselves in establishing communication with machines, have forgotten to establish effective communication with humans. They can crack any logical issue on the earth, but find it challenging to communicate in a natural, clear, concise and fair manner with people around them. 

Why techies find it difficult to communicate?
 For techies language is all about transmitting information and not building relationships. 
       
       If you are a Smart Techie with a brilliant idea and a master plan to execute;
    • How are you going to do that?
    • Are you going to execute the project all by yourself or you would need a team to help you execute your idea?
    • If you need a team to support you, then you must become an effective communicator. 
    • You can not talk to people as you talk to machines. Machines through problems at you if you are not in sync with them. They collapse or even crash if you don't follow the path set to communicate with them.
    • Where as people sync with you oblige to you, work overtime to complete your work. People ensure you achieve your targets. 
How Machines different from humans? 
            Communication with machines in one sided and logical. Communication with                           humans is two sided and subtle. 

How can we beat the Challenge?         

    1. Managers need to recognise the importance of people to an organisation.
    2. Managers need to understand that humans build organisations, and machines can't!
    3. Managers need to realise that humans are emotional and need to be handled with care and concern!


BEING HUMAN is more important than just a HUMAN BEING!!!


Tips to Managers to make your job easy!

    Keep your language Simple, Clear and Crisp!
    • Before you initiate a conversation list out the points you wish to discuss, get your understanding on the same.
    • Identify the person you need to talk to and decide how you want to present the information to that person. 
    • Decide your approach based on the person's mind set. 
    • Your tone, expressions, gestures and body language matters if you want your communication to be effective.(result oriented)

    e-Mail Communication is a must in the Corporate world.  

    e-Mail communication has 2 advantages: 

    1) Proof of communication (all time evidence) 
    2) Communication will be Clear, Concise and Complete. (CCC)

    Why techies don't like written communication?
    • Since English is their second language some of the Techies have problem with expression and doubt their syntaxes. (confused with Grammar)
                    Initially you can Start writing in bulleted points and work on improving it.                               Don't hesitate to get cross-checked by a friend or a supporting team member or                       a senior
    • Some of the non-English speaking techies are not very good at building sentences due to poor grammar base.
                 Take every opportunity to attend a workshop or few classes in English Grammar                  to  strengthen your verbal & written communication skills.
    • Writing is the biggest challenge to Techies. 
                 You have faced bigger challenges in your life! Yet another one! Work it out and                   it will never be a challenge.
